In the autumn of 2004 Jayson Mackie began a compulsory placement at St Patrick’s R.C. Primary School, Grangetown, Cardiff in training to be a classroom teaching assistant. The teachers organising the Christmas productions and choir concert heard that Jayson was a music graduate (he’d recently completed an MMus at the RWCMD), and he was quickly roped in to assist in piano duties for forthcoming concerts.

“… This, I didn’t mind as I quickly realised my skills could make me very useful, and potentially bag me a much-needed paid job. I threw myself into it all and penned my first carol on the night of Monday 6th December. I was cutting it fine as the choir’s carol service was that Friday evening. A rush job and a longshot but as soon as they heard it and decided its catchiness meant it could be learnt quickly, it went down as a winner with the choir and staff alike”.

Awarded 2nd place in the Recital Music Christmas Carol Competition in 2012.
