Hornpipes and Sea Shanties evolved in the days of the sailing ship. The sailors would sing while working and sing and dance for their own amusement, and occasionally improvise words to the tunes to let the Captain know the feelings of the crew….. be they good or bad. The tunes were always rhythmically suited to the seafaring life.
